From the 3rd of October 2023 to the 9th of October 2023, Bharat Soka Gakkai (BSG) spearheaded an astounding plastic collection initiative in Delhi-NCR. In just seven days, an impressive 27,726 kilograms of plastic waste was gathered, underscoring the community’s unwavering commitment to combating plastic pollution and promoting sustainable practices.

The driving force behind this monumental effort was BSG members in Delhi-NCR, who, right from the outset on the 3rd of October 2023, dedicated themselves to this noble cause. As previously reported during the campaign’s launch event (https://www.bharatsokagakkai.org/launch-event-of-the-bsg-25-tonne-plastic-collection-drive/), BSG also extended its reach by partnering with schools, hospitals, and community members, instigating a collective effort to collect plastic waste. Notably, the invaluable support of recycling partners, Blue Nudge and Bisleri, ensured that the plastics would be recycled in an environmentally responsible manner.”

The journey to this triumphant collection drive commenced on the 1st of August 2023 as part of a broader campaign (https://www.bharatsokagakkai.org/bsg-for-society/sustainability/sustainability-initiatives-in-the-community/bsg-launches-a-25-tonne-plastic-campaign/). Over the two-month period leading up to the collection drive, approximately 1400 Plastic Coordinators emerged as decisive figures. They not only raised awareness about the campaign in their communities but also led by example, overcoming personal doubts and external limitations to achieve remarkable outcomes. One coordinator, in a striking display of dedication, single-handedly collected a substantial 130 kilograms of plastic waste from her local community.

This collective endeavour illuminated the importance of segregating plastic waste and recycling. Members, inspired by the mission, expressed their heartfelt gratitude for being part of this transformational initiative, fuelling their determination to live eco-conscious and plastic-free lives

The ripple effect created by BSG members transcended their community, prompting various organizations, including schools, factories, and hospitals, to join forces in the collection drive. Examples abound, with one institution conducting an exhaustive plastic waste collection from two local parks, while a school mobilized its students to contribute plastic waste from their own households.

One member engaged in dialogues with factories within an industrial zone, resulting in the collection of 250 kilograms of plastic waste.

Another member traversed from one school to another, collaborating with her Resident Welfare Association (RWA), engaging in dialogues with over 100 individuals, and collecting 130 kilograms of plastic.

During the collection drive, BSG members exhibited profound care and consideration for the drivers and support staff involved in the recycling process. Both Blue Nudge and Bisleri lauded the genuine sincerity of BSG members and expressed their eagerness to continue collaborating on future initiatives.

This monumental achievement stands as a testament to BSG’s unwavering commitment to addressing the urgent issue of plastic pollution. “We are thrilled with the outcome of the ‘BSG 25-Tonne Plastic Collection Drive,'” stated BSG Chairperson Vishesh Gupta. “This initiative underscores the immense power of collective action in creating a tangible impact on our environment. Together, we can significantly reduce plastic waste and safeguard our planet for generations to come.”

The collected plastic waste will be responsibly recycled, effectively preventing it from polluting landfills or oceans, where it poses a significant threat to wildlife and ecosystems. In addition to the Plastic Collection Drive, BSG is committed to promoting environmental awareness and sustainability through community-driven initiatives, demonstrating the limitless potential of such efforts.
