BSG conducts third annual plastic collection drive in Kolkata

7th – 15th October 2025
Kolkata

BSG organized its 3rd annual Plastic Collection Drive as part of its ongoing “Say No to Plastic” campaign in Kolkata this year.

The drive kick-started with full vigour through a launch event held on October 6, 2024, where over 2280 BSG members and guests came together to take a stand for a cleaner, sustainable future.

Chief Guest Mrs. Punam Jaju, Former President & Chief Patron of the SwitchON Foundation and Chairperson of Resource Recovery, inspired everyone with her words: “If you can’t reuse it, choose to refuse it.” Through her engaging talk, she highlighted how comfort-driven choices often lead to collective misfortune and urged everyone to adopt mindful consumption and responsible waste practices in daily life.

BSG’s recycling partners, Vital Waste and Greenovation, joined hands to support the initiative, as members across Kolkata pledged to collect and send plastic waste for recycling between October 7 -15, 2025.

What followed over the next eight days has surely made Kolkata more determined than ever to slash its plastic waste.

What our Participants shared

I’m extremely happy to have contributed 25 kg of plastic waste and even offered my godown as a collection point. This initiative by BSG allowed me to protect our Mother Earth, and I’m determined to continue with the same enthusiasm and dedication

Mita Agrawal

Recently, I traveled for a vacation and took an empty bag with me, and came back with empty water bottles and plastic containers that we used during our tour.

Sokhisona Mullick

The collection drive has truly motivated my mother, who went to our local market and spoke to people who usually discard plastic waste carelessly. She explained how proper disposal and small actions can help save our environment. Her sincerity moved everyone, and she collected 1.5 kg of plastic waste from them.

Sulagna Saha

A sudden downpour swept away the plastic waste we had carefully collected. Though it felt disheartening, we didn’t give up and started again. It reminded us that persistence and teamwork make every small effort meaningful, even when nature tests our resolve.

Nidhi Mittal

As a district coordinator, during the Durga Puja celebrations, my comrades and I proudly set up a community plastic recycling counter. Despite severe floods washing away much of the waste, we collected 30 kg from our neighbours, and our district’s remarkable spirit helped us reach an inspiring 38 kg in total, far surpassing our target.

Mou Das

As a district coordinator, I’m truly grateful to be part of this meaningful campaign. With the immense support of BSG members, we successfully collected and deposited 34 kg of plastic.

Urmimala Ray

Our housing community is now fully enthusiastic! We’ll be implementing plastic segregation and collection as an ongoing process. With support from our collection partner, we’ve brought together over 50 families from our neighbourhood to join this effort.

Sreela Pillai Roy

I motivated my entire apartment to participate, and together, our district collected 24.21 kg of plastic. The support from society and BSG members made this drive a true success, showing how small, consistent actions can create a cleaner and greener Kolkata.

Sasmita Mallik

Through BSG’s “Say No to Single-Use Plastic” campaign, I began collecting and recycling plastic waste from my home and community. Across the two regions of our zone, with over 1,000 BSG members, we deposited more than 350 kg of plastic waste—a true testament to what can be achieved when many individuals take small, sincere steps together.

Ayushi Bhawsinghka

I personally collected 6 kg of plastic and witnessed an amazing zeal in our region. This drive improved my behaviour towards the environment, and I switched all my drinking water bottles to steel.

Arjun Mukherjee

A total of 18 households from my district collected 13.5 kg of plastic. This experience gave me immense respect for our leaders and for the spirit of unity that defines Soka Gakkai.

Alandari Muralidhar Sai

I prepared banners and participated in the “Say No to Plastic” campaign. Under my mother’s guidance as the District Plastic Coordinator of our district in the Howrah region, we collected 50 kg of plastic waste and promoted a cleaner environment. I’m proud to have supported my mother in packaging, loading, and playing a positive role in this initiative.

Chandrajyoti Ghorai

What made the Kolkata Plastic Collection Drive truly special was the remarkable community participation it inspired, from setting up recycling counters during Durga Puja to families and neighbours joining hands for plastic collection, even when sudden downpours washed away already collected waste in several instances.

A primary goal motivating BSG’s Plastic Collection Drive, and each of its participants, was “Sustainable Human Behaviour”, which believes in the importance and power of positive behavioral change to create tangible environmental impact and advance sustainability.

BSG is determined to continue working for its “Say No to Plastic” initiative and achieve the SDGs by 2030 through “Sustainable Human Behaviour”.
