Soka Gakkai Seafarers' Photo Exhibit

"Beyond the Horizon," a collection of photographs taken by the "Hato-kai," Soka Gakkai members working as sailors on ocean-going vessels, was shown at the Royal Mumbai Yacht Club, established in 1839, in Mumbai (former Bombay), India.

The exhibit displays breathtaking photographic images of natural beauty captured at sea and at port cities. Also displayed are photographs taken by Indian sea captains and valuable photographs from the Rahman Maritime Museum taken of prominent Indian figures, such as Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Indira Gandhi.

Captain K. Guha, who heads the Company of Master Mariners of India, an association of over 1,500 sea captions, had learned about the Hato-kai seafarers' photograph exhibit when he attended an opening of "Dialogue with Nature," a collection of photographs by SGI President Daisaku Ikeda. He lauded the Hato-kai's efforts to realize the exhibition in Mumbai, and praised them for contributing to peace through cultural and friendship exchange.

The Company of Master Mariners of India and Mumbai Chapter of Bharat Soka Gakkai together are supporting the exhibit. Guests attending the event included: Mrs. Usha Gokani, grandaughter of Mahatma Gandhi; former cultural minister of Maharashtra State Pramod Navalkar; Principal Secretary Govind Swarup of the Department of Cultural Affairs, Maharashtra State; and ex-sheriff of Mumbai Nana Chudasama.

The seafarers began organizing their annual photo exhibit in 1987 out of a desire to build cultural bridges across the oceans and bring the peoples of the world closer together. The exhibit has also traveled to the Pacific ports of Russia, the Philippines, China, Vietnam and Malaysia.
