Introduction

Buddhist Life PhilosophyThe Bharat Soka Gakkai and the Soka Gakkai International have their roots in the life-affirming philosophy of Nichiren, a Buddhist monk who lived in 13th century Japan. Nichiren’s teachings assert that each individual, regardless of race, gender, capacity or social standing, has the power to tap unlimited courage, compassion and wisdom from the depths of their own lives and overcome life’s inevitable challenges. This enables them to develop a life of great value and creativity, and to positively influence their community, society and the world.

BSG and SGI members are therefore committed to undergoing a deep transformation in the depths of their own life, and consequently, bringing about ripples of change in their immediate environment and in society at large.
